Fayth Watkins' Favorite Classroom Books!

My name is Fayth Watkins and I am studying Elementary Education at The University of Montevallo. I am saving some of my favorite books that I can one day use in my classroom and ideas of activities to go along with each book.

Duck Rabbit

Duck! Rabbit! - Amy Krouse Rosenthal, Tom Lichtenheld

Duck Rabbit is book all about perspective and how one person sees a duck and the other person sees a rabbit. After reading this book, teachers can have a discussion about there being more than one way to see the world and then have students write an opinion piece about if they saw a duck or a rabbit. This book is a level 16 on the DRA leveling system.

Pete The Cat Rocking In My School Shoes

Pete the Cat: Rocking in My School Shoes - Eric Litwin, James Dean

Pete The Cat Rocking In My School Shoes is a fun engaging book that would be great to read on the first day of school to students. One activity that could go with this book would be for students to write about their favorite thing about the first day of school. This book is a level 430L on the Lexile leveling system.

Wilfrid Gordon McDonald Partridge

Wilfrid Gordon McDonald Partridge - Mem Fox, Julie Vivas

Wilfrid Gordon McDonald Partridge is a book about a boy who wants to help an elderly lady who has lost her memory. Wilfrid asks people what a memory is in hopes to find and return her memory to her. One activity you could use with this book is the "History of Me" activity where students cut our pictures in magazines that represent who they are. This would be a great "get to know" activity. This book is a level 18 on the DRA leveling system.

Where The Wild Things Are

Where The Wild Things Are - Maurice Sendak

Where The Wild Things Are is a great book to incorporate into a classroom and has a variety of activities that could go along with it. One activity that teachers could use is to have their class write a story about all of the mischief that Max makes throughout the story. This book is a level 740L on the Lexile Leveling System.
